Fair Hit Hard by Governor's
Budget
Governor Gregoire's proposed budget guts the fund that supports
agricultural fairs across the state. Asotin County Fair
receives approximately $35,204 a year from the fund. If the
Governor's proposed cuts pass the legislature, that amounts will be
cut in half or may be eliminated completely. Without state
support, the fair may not be able to pay premiums to youth.
Other fair programs may be reduced as well. Some fair,
including Asotin, may close completely.
The Fair Fund currently has a balance of $2 million that is
scheduled to be paid to fairs in the Spring. The Governor's
supplemental budget takes away $1.2 million of that. In the
Governor's 2011-2013 budget, the Fair Fund is reduced from $2
Million per year to $500,000 per year.
In past years, an additional $200,000 was also awarded to fairs
for health and safety upgrades such as hand washing stations and
restroom remodels. That money has also been eliminated.
The Fair Fund supports 68 fairs in Washington. There is a
fairground in every county except King. Youth and Community
Fairs including the State 4-H Fair and the State FFA also receive
support.
Many Community Organizations use the fair as their major
fundraising event of the year. Some fairs will not survive if
the Fair Fund is cut. Community organizations that depend on
those fairs will also suffer compounding the effects on the
community.
The Fair Fund has not increased since 1993.
