The biennial event coincides with the 40th anniversary of the United Steelworkers Press Association (USPA), a group representing over 225 local unions in the United States and Canada .

USW communication facilitators will instruct courses in writing, editing, layout and design for delegates at the novice, intermediate and advanced levels.

“This network of communicators has flourished over the past five years as local unions recognize the importance of developing better lines of communications with their members,” said Marco Trbovich, USW Assistant to the President and Director of Communications.

The conference will conclude Wednesday evening with the Biennial Awards Banquet. Local union editors and webmasters will be recognized for their achievements in communications during the past two years.

COMMUNICATION SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE REPORT

April 6, 2006

To the Officers and Members of USW Local 609,

In brief, the trip I was included in to our International Headquarters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was on behalf of the “COMMUNICATIONS SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE”.  All those attending were to benefit from the knowledge of the Communications Department of the USW, which is vastly overflowing with experience and ability.

Along with learning basics in how to better write articles, and from what point of view, legality and verbiage; we learned how to title and the best way to present the facts to make it a educational yet quick read.  The Graphics Department instructed us how to best take pictures, adjust and place them within articles.

The responsibility, I found out for all the fact filled articles in our local’s newsletter doesn’t come from the editor; but from the Committee chairpersons and Officers.  They are the Root-source of knowledge in their areas of responsibilities.  So from this point forward I will be relying on those individuals for input in the Newsletter.

In all the week of March 19th through the 24 was greatly informative and educational for me.  And with luck it will be relayed in a better-produced newsletter and web site for our local.

With much gratitude and appreciation,

Jeff Welle

Getting Started: New Editor Training

The objectives of the program are designed to:

* enhance writing & editing skills;
* develop better photography skills;
* improving newsletter and website graphic content, design and layout.

The program will also assist scholarship recipients in building media relations, developing and disseminating messages, creating and managing press events, and pitching stories with the media and getting media event coverage.

Yes, Sisters and Brothers, I went to the International building in Pittsburgh and received the "Communication Scholarship Program" training and WOW; was it great.  We learned so many tips and tricks of the writing trade by honored and very well qualified journalism trainers.

I hope the new skills I have learned will help me in the future with this website and newsletter.  Thanks to all who made it possible.
