Meeting the PAC Challenge
Corporations outspend labor in politics 19 - 1.
Although unions could never match the donations of corporations, we do
have the opportunity to play a larger role in financing political
activism through our Political Action Committees (PACs). If we could
sign up every Steelworker member in the United States in our PAC check
off program for a minimum voluntary contribution of $1.00 per week, we
have the potential to raise in excess of $15,000,000 per year.
These contributions, along with the level of
activism that we have already achieved, would allow us to win much
needed legislation, such as health insurance for steelworkers who lost
their jobs because of the failed trade policies of the past decade,
lower prescription drugs for all Americans, better trade policies that
would stop the mass exodus manufacturers, and possibly even the
much-sought-after National Health Care for all Americans.
The opposition we face in addressing these
challenges is formidable:

Idaho
In Idaho, and across the nation, Americans
are facing the most important issues of our time. Having a voice in
the political system and in government is crucial.
The basic workplace rights that Americans
enjoy today have been championed by organized labor for more than 100
years.
Without the political efforts of unions,
American workers would not have a right to a minimum wage, a
forty-hour week, overtime pay, worker's compensation, unemployment
insurance, or the right to form and join unions. Unions have been at
the forefront of the fight to make workplaces safer and to ensure that
no one will be discriminated against at work because of their race,
ethnicity, or gender.
The USW remains politically active because
there are organized interests in Idaho and the United States that want
to dilute or eliminate the rights workers have established over the
last century of struggle.
We participate in politics in many ways and

Protect
Your Right to Form a Union
"The
Union Movement is the last and only line of defense for working
Americans."
Our union has always
followed three guiding principles when endorsing political candidates.
First, the wellbeing and opinions of our members are paramount. Second,
as a union we fundamentally believe that the right to collectively
bargain contracts is the only way to ensure high wages, good health care
and a safe retirement. Lastly, we believe that the primary role of the
federal government and elected officials is to help people reach their
potential, and that once a person reaches their potential, they have an
obligation as an American to help others do the same.
We will need your help in
mounting a campaign to drive both Democrats and Republicans away from
corporate interests and back to our fundamental principles. The Union
Movement is the last and only line of defense for working Americans.
These are fights that will directly impact our economic interests. And
we can win them if we speak with a united voice.
This website is designed
as a resource to help Protect Your Union, provide issue specific
information on working Americans, tools to motivate your local and
community, and as a way to elect officials who are pro-worker.
