As a rule, a national calling plan (which typically eliminates extra long-distance charges or fees for "roaming" away from your home calling area) is worth considering first, even if you don't travel often. With a regional plan, roaming charges can add up if you make calls too far away from your home. No matter which carrier you choose, take advantage of any trial period to test the service.

2. NEW - Web site for union members concerned about debt SEND TO A UNION FRIEND

If you're worried about mounting consumer debt, you're not alone.

Squeezed by corporate greed and government policies that are favoring the rich, Americans are spending more than they're earning and consumer debt is at an all-time high. And it keeps rising.

Working families can benefit from a new Union Plus Web site designed exclusively to help union members better handle their debt. UnionDebtHelp.org offers a number of helpful tools including:

3.  Dollars and cents for new college students SEND TO A UNION FRIEND

Most high school students don't have much experience balancing a budget or living on a budget. That's fine for now, but what happens when your college-bound student leaves for college?

You can't be responsible for managing their daily living expenses when you're hundreds of miles apart. Before they leave for school, you should make sure that they can effectively manage their finances.

A major factor for students to successfully manage their finances is to have a detailed conversation about the financial limitations they'll be living with while at school.  Find helpful tips here.

4.  Making college more affordable for union families SEND TO A UNION FRIEND

The Union Plus College Planning Center is a great resource for union families looking to pay for college. Offered in conjunction with the unionized American Education Services (AES), the College Planning Center provides families with financial aid counseling, a step-by-step guide on choosing a school and much more.

  • Since 1992, the Union Plus Scholarship Program has awarded more than $2.4 million to students of working families who want to begin or continue their secondary education.
  • The Union Plus Education Loan program provides low-cost federal loans and private loans with rate reductions for automatic and on-time payments. There is also a strike benefit for education loan holders in good standing.
  • The union scholarship database includes more than $4 million in scholarships, with details about eligibility, application deadlines and contact information.

Did you know that at some colleges, private scholarships may directly reduce the amount of institutional aid the college offers? Or that other colleges allow scholarships to reduce the amount of loans a student may have to consider to fill in the "gap" between financial awards and need? UNION ISSUES
Employee Free Choice Act

EFCA logoA 51-48 Senate majority backed the Employee Free Choice Act on June 26, 2007, but Republican opposition killed the bill. So even though a majority of the Senate voted to bring the bill to the floor for a vote, a small group of Republicans denied workers a free choice to join a union. Without the bill, America's workers will continue to face unchecked employer harassment and intimidation when they seek to form a union. Find out how your senator voted.
