Steelworker and Real Life Swamp Man Guides Brotherhood Outdoors Host on a Hunt for Louisiana's Big Toothy Gators
Thursday, Jan. 12 at 8 p.m. ET/PT

Wayne ‘Kip’ Benoit, a union steelworker (USW Local 750) from Boutte, LA, has spent his life navigating and learning about the swampy lands he calls home. Conserving the land he lives on allows him to apply for permits to hunt the monster gators that live there. Aboard his airboat, he has introduced youth and adults to gator hunting and the outdoors and helped with Hurricane Katrina rescue efforts. In this episode, host Tom Ackerman heads to the Louisiana swamps where Kip teaches him how to hunt those big, toothy lizards.

All-New Season of Brotherhood Outdoors Premieres with a Fast-Action Hog Hunt Featuring Ironworker Jessica Reagor

Jessica Reagor, a member of Ironworkers Local 395 from Chesterton, IN, shot her first .22 at age five and took up deer hunting a few years ago, proving “it’s not only a sport for males.” Her hunting pursuits were put on hold when she and her husband adopted a baby with special needs, as much of their time has been devoted to guiding him through the obstacles he’s faced in his short life. Now this hardworking Ironworker and devoted mother makes an impressive comeback as she chases wild hogs up and down the hills of California in a roller coaster ride of a hunt.

Gear | American Made Rods & Reels
by Steve Felgenhauer

I have a confession. I am drawn to a rack of fishing poles like a moth drawn to a flame. Most times after I examine them I’m left with the same feeling. Burned. Made in China, made in the Philippines, made in ... Well, you get the picture.

Depending on the year you were born or if you fished with hand-me-down fishing gear, like I did, perhaps you recall names like Pflueger, Shakespeare, South Bend and who could forget Zebco. Today’s gear might sound familiar using the old same name game, but that is where the similarity ends.

Has affordable American-made fishing equipment gone the route of the Dodo and the passenger pigeon?  Click here for more.

Wet feet can put a real damper on any outdoor experience and make a day on the job seem a lot longer.  But there’s an easy and effective solution called the PEET Dryer.  It uses gentle air circulation to remove wetness, while neutralizing odor-causing bacteria and extending the life of your boots. The PEET Dryer can be used on gloves, gun safes, hydration systems and other gear too.  So get dry and get back outside.

Technique | Hunting for Sheds
by Mike Hanback

Why do white-tailed bucks spend so much time and energy growing marvellous antlers in the spring and summer only to cast them off their heads five or six months later?

"Scientists have pondered it for years, and we still don’t know exactly why," said Dr. Mickey Hellickson, one of the foremost deer biologists in the world.  But the good doctor points to a couple of solid theories.  Learn those theories and some tips for finding sheds.

Events | USA Kicks Off Event Season

While much of the country was still thawing from yet another winter blast, the USA was way down south on February 12 for our Southern Florida Sporting Clays Shoot, hosted by IBEW Locals 728 and 349 and the S. FL Chapter of NECA.  This was the first USA event of 2011, and though the morning began with a cold rain, the Sunshine State held true to its name; the sun came out by the time shooters spread out on the 14 station course and busted their first clays.  Read more.

Conservation | America's Great Outdoors Agenda

In April, President Obama launched the America’s Great Outdoors (AGO) Initiative.  He asked the Department of Agriculture, Department of the Interior, Environmental Protection Agency and White House Council on Environmental Quality to develop a 21st Century conservation and recreation agenda that truly reflects the concerns and desires of American citizens.

Agency heads arranged numerous public meetings, forums, and outreach sessions across the nation. More than 10,000 people participated, and more than 100,000 public comments were submitted. Last week, AGO released a report entitled A Promise to Future Generations, reflecting grassroots citizen-based input and recommendations. Learn more about the report.
